On May 9, IDC members, architects, manufacturers, and industry representatives gathered in Ottawa, Ont. for another edition of DesignEx.
Hosted at Sala San Marco Event & Conference Centre, the event featured three seminars, a workshop, lunch, and DesignEx’s signature table top show.
The day started with a building code seminar presented by Dana Scherf, P.Eng., Senior Code Consultant, Director of Code and Life Safety Group at Morrison Hershfield Limited (MH). The seminar demonstrated how to find, identify, and apply key code requirements for egress and exiting, interior finishes and combustible materials.
The next seminar, “Future Smart” presented by Annette Barrelet, Manager, Workplace Strategy at Teknion, focused on planning and designing for uncertainty.
The seminar synopsis notes that profound change and the ‘premature arrival of the future,’ may destabilize social and economic structures, but can also mobilize human ingenuity—inspiring achievements that have remade the material world.
Next up was “Caliente or Ice Blue”, a workshop presented by Danielle Dent, Architectural Design Representative at Benjamin Moore. The workshop gathered attendees for a fun and interactive activity where they determined whether various colour trends were a hot trend or a trend of the past.
The final seminar of the day, titled, “Draw Your Projects Once, not Twice!” presented by Camille Chami, President of CADcentre, showed attendees ways to streamline the design process and eliminate duplicated effort regardless of the designer’s specific workflow.
At DesignEx events, the networking opportunities are just as important as the educational seminars. The afternoon featured a table top show with exhibitor booths from 21 firms showcasing new and popular products and a networking opportunity with prominent industry representatives from the Ottawa design community. Held across Canada, DesignEx events are a way for local designers and professionals to break into regional markets, generate new clients, and learn new industry-specific skills from handpicked experts.
