Webinar: At Home In Canada: Interior Design with Different Eyes

juin 1, 2021 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm EDT

Presentation Description:

Preparing, consuming, and storing food provide structure to domestic life in Canada. Certainly, a significant element in residential design, the design of spaces connected with food (preparing dishes, organizing/renegotiating functional spaces, dining spaces, and alternatives, objects of cultural significance, etc.) also play a key role in notions of identity, heritage retention, and belonging for many immigrants to Canada.

This webinar will present a unique research project (funded by a federal SSHRC grant) that reflects upon the immense benefits and significance of diversity, humanity, and cultural integration in the design of Canadian kitchen and dining spaces. The presentation also focuses upon the benefits of a non-traditional collaboration between faculty, curators, and students at Algonquin College, Carleton University, and the Canada Science & Technology Museum as well as members of the Anatolian/Turkish communities in Ottawa and Montreal.

Presenter bio:

Dorothy has been a professor in the Bachelor of Interior Design (BID) Program at Algonquin College in Ottawa, Ontario since 1998, and was the Program Coordinator from 1998 – 2008. During this time she spearheaded the BID program’s Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) accreditation, its transformation from a three-year diploma program to a four-year baccalaureate credential, as well as the BID Bridging Program.

In addition to sharing her passion about the role of interior design in the responsible shaping of our world with students, she continues to be engaged in the interior design profession through research and interdisciplinary collaboration. Dorothy is a Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) site visitor, a registered member of the Association of Registered Interior Designers of Ontario (ARIDO), and a member of the Interior Design Educators Council (IDEC). Dorothy was also the Director of Education on the Board of Interior Designers of Canada (IDC) from 2011 – 2013.

Dorothy’s life-long passion is to better understand the wonder and complexity of design, and then to share this knowledge and excitement with young designers. She is grateful to all the design professionals whom she has taught: for teaching her at least as much as she has taught them

This webinar accounts for one IDCEC hour. Participants will receive their certificates of completion via email following the webinar and will need to self report their hours.

This webinar will be offered in English.
