Keynote speaker and honouree announced for Vancouver Leaders Breakfast

Published by Sarah Brown, October 28, 2011.

The recent opening of Pixar Animation's new 30,000 square-foot facility in the heart of Vancouver's Gastown inspired the choice for this year's keynote speaker. The second annual IIDA/IDC Vancouver Leaders Breakfast is pleased to welcome Pixar Art Director Jay Shuster as its keynote for the event, set to take place as part of BUILDEX Vancouver on Thursday, February 9. The 2012 Breakfast will honour Larry Beasley, retired Director of Planning for the City of Vancouver and founding principal of the international planning consultancy, Beasley and Associates.

As Art Director for Pixar Animation Studios in California, Jay Shuster's characters and sketch work can be seen in such films as CARS (2006) and WALL-E (2008). In 2011 Jay worked as Character Art Director on Disney Pixar's sequel to CARS. Jay connected his passion for all things related to transportation to a future in the film industry when he saw Star Wars for the first time. The film inspired Jay to want to work in an unrestrained creative culture. That desire brought him to Lucasfilm Ltd., where he designed a variety of vehicles and environments for the Star Wars prequel film trilogy. Jay Shuster graduated in 1993 from the Industrial Design program at College for Creative Studies in Detroit, MI. He currently resides in San Francisco.

Larry Beasley is the Distinguished Practice Professor of Planning at the University of British Columbia and is vice-president of Canadian development company, Aquilini Development. Mr. Beasley was influential in shaping Vancouver's urban landscape and championing New Urbanism. In 2005, Mr. Beasley was invested as a Member of the Order of Canada, the nation's highest honour for lifetime achievement.
