Students and home builders Home Sweet Home Competiton

Published by Julia Salerno, October 29, 2010.

Ontario Green Spec is an online directory to help you find green building products and services available in Ontario. It's a free service, funded by its member companies and the categories used are based on those used by Ontario's leading Green Building programs, like LEED and Energy Star.

At the IIDEX/Green Building Festival last September, Ontario Green Spec launched two competitions. IDC is proud to collaborate with Ontario Green Spec to help promote interior design in green building initiatives. The first is designed for industry, which awards Ontario contractors, and/or individuals who have built an ecologically and socially responsible home in Ontario; and the second awards Ontario post-secondary students for designing green homes via a written submission rather than a constructed project.

Home Sweet Home Competition:

Home builders are judged on energy reduction, water efficiency, waste reduction, transportation, technical repeatability, environmentally preferable building materials, affordability, technical innovation, social engagement and the potential impact on market transformation. Awards will be given out annually in one of four categories. Deadline for submissions is December 31. For entry guidelines and more information, visit the competition website.

Student Challenge:

The Student Challenge invites entrants to design a "marketable" green home for a hypothetical client. The Challenge encourages students to research the latest green building methods and technologies and to design a home that is not only environmentally preferable, but one that is stylish, cost-effective, and marketable on a large scale. For entry guidelines and for more information, visit the Student Challenge website or download the poster. Submission deadline is March 1, 2011. It's not too late. Get involved today!
