World Interiors Day showcases the design industry

Published by Sarah Bradbury, May 31, 2011.

Saturday, May 28, 2011 marked the annual global event, World Interiors Day (WID), spearheaded by IFI (International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers). The event was created to provide an occasion to highlight the merits of the interior professions and their impact on quality of life. This year's WID was held in Montreal, QC, with a "Green Interiors" theme.

The purpose of WID is to actively engage professionals, design enthusiasts and the public at large to explore their creativity, imagination, vision and passion in recognition of the role of interior architecture/design in our society. This year marks the inaugural official adoption of World Interiors Day in Canada. As WID grows in scale and involvement every year, it is IFI's ambition to see more national and regional governments mark this important date on their calendars. This year, World Interiors Day was celebrated by more than 70 member associations in over 45 countries worldwide, which included Canadian representation through IDC, APDIQ, Mission Design and others.

In conjunction with World Interiors Day celebrations, APDIQ held its first ever Excellence Awards Gala on May 26, in partnership with Mission Design, IDC, IFI, and Montreal UNESCO City of Design. The event will provided an opportunity for the Quebec interior design community to come together and celebrate excellence achieved by their APDIQ peers. The event began celebrations for the fifth anniversary of Montreal's designation as UNESCO City of Design.

A total of five awards were presented:
Congratulations, Igloo Design for winning the Employer of the Year award, five employees or less; Dumont designer conseil who won Employer of the Year with more than five employees; Mylène Parent, winner of the Emerging Designer award, Michel Ducharme with a Lifetime Achievement award, and Sandra Corneau et Natalie Junod de MÀD as the winners of the 2011 Member of the Year.
