IDC Executive team attends NeoCon

Published by Alexandra Tichinoff, June 27, 2012.

powerthink-(2).gifIn June, members of the IDC board travelled to Chicago to attend NeoCon, the interior design exposition and conference. For three days, the IDC team participated in a number of show and association events with the aim of raising IDC’s profile in the building community and promoting Canadian interior design internationally.

“As we collaborate with others in the building community, including architects, interior designers, industry and more, it becomes increasingly important for IDC to have a presence at NeoCon,” says IDC President Donna Assaly.

“After years of attending, there’s someone we know at every turn. Given there were over 40,000 attendees at NeoCon, our efforts to expand our network and promote Canadian interior design internationally are working.

Association events

On Sunday morning, IDC joined IIDA chapter leaders at a welcome breakfast at the Haworth showroom. Congratulations to Haworth on their win for best new showroom!

The IDC team attended IIDA’s Annual Meeting on Sunday afternoon, where Jim Williamson was inducted as the new IIDA president. IDC looks forward to working with Jim in the coming year.

On Monday morning, IDC President Donna Assaly, Executive Director Susan Wiggins and IIDEX/NeoCon Canada liaison Trevor Kruse joined the IIDA leadership for Power Think: the Who Where and How of Work. This panel discussion, moderated by Susan Wiggins and IIDA Vice-President and CEO Cheryl Durst, addressed new realities for leading a firm and ways to change a client’s approach to design.

It wouldn’t be NeoCon without the parties! On Sunday night, the team attended IIDA’s COOL Gala, where the 39th Annual Interior Design Competition winners were presented with their awards. One Canadian project stood out among the award winners: congratulations to Perkins+Will’s Toronto office on their award for The Instructional Centre at the University of Toronto.

There was more festivity Monday night when the IDC team attended Celebration, the American Society of Interior Design (ASID) Design Awards. Congratulations to Rosalyn Cama, this year’s recipient of the Society’s highest honour, the Designer of Distinction award. Cama specializes in interior design for education and health care, and is a recognized expert in the field of evidence-based design.

Next year’s NeoCon will take place June 10 to 12, 2013, at the Merchandise Mart in Chicago.
