Bill 119: Changes to the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act in Ontario January 1, 2013

Published by Alexandra Tichinoff, July 30, 2012.

Following the proclamation of Bill 119 Mandatory Coverage in Construction, several major changes to the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act (WSIA) will come into effect on January 1, 2013.

When hiring a contractor or independent operator to perform construction work, mandatory coverage will require interior designers to ensure that clearance certificates are already in place or, failing that, obtain a clearance certificate before work can begin. Failure to ensure that contractors or independent operators have a valid clearance certificate could result in both the interior designer and the contractor being fined or even criminally charged.  Click here to learn more about these changes.

You can find additional information about Mandatory Coverage on the WSIB website by clicking here.
