Canadian Interiors and Interior Designers of Canada Unveil New Benchmarking and Best Practices Study for Canadian Interior Design Industry

Canadian Interiors Magazine and Interior Designers of Canada (IDC) today unveiled the 2011 Canadian Interior Design Benchmarking and Best Practices Study, based on detailed information collected from interior design and architecture professionals across the country. The study sheds much-needed light on Canadian interior design business trends related to the size and scope of the industry, billing rates and salaries of practitioners as well as firm longevity and specialization.

The results presented are based on information submitted by respondents from across Canada, including registered professionals in the fields of interior design and architecture. The results of this study establish, first and foremost, the size and scope of the industry. The gathered data reveals that multi-person design firms completed a median of 20 projects in 2010, where the total median size of all combined projects was 150,000 square feet. One-person design firms completed a median of 10 projects during this period where the total media size of all combined projects was around 43,000 square feet.*

While providing in-depth information on Canadian interior design firms’ growth, compensation structure, and many other useful facts and figures, the findings encouragingly underline the Canadian interior design industry’s continued recovery from the economic downturn of 2009, as demonstrated by steady or increasing staffing levels, improvement in overall billings, a healthy profitability average and favourable business outlooks. Ultimately, the study aims to provide industry decision-makers and practitioners with valuable information as they establish their growth and marketing strategies for the future.

“Despite the ever increasing public interest in interior design, the demographics of the profession are not widely known. The release of this study is significant in the fact that it is the first study of its kind conducted in Canada since 1998,” explains Susan Wiggins, Executive Director of IDC. “It is our hope that the results of this study not only increase this knowledge base but influence and ultimately better interior design practices across the country.”

The 2011 Canadian Interior Design Benchmarking and Best Practices Study is a joint initiative of Canadian Interiors Magazine and IDC, who advocates on behalf of the profession. It was conducted in the form of an online survey, in both English and French, sent out to registered interior designers and architects and ultimately gathered information from 581 respondents from across the country.

*The June issue of ID Connections reported findings from the Interior Design Benchmarking & Best Practices Survey, a study that IDC produced in partnership with Canadian Interiors magazine. While the reported numbers reflect the findings of the survey, they were reported using averages (means) only. The numbers may therefore have been misleading, as averages can be dramatically affected by extreme values in the dataset. For this reason, the findings have been replaced using the median. The median is the middle value and is not distorted by extreme values.
