Design Excellence Celebrated at IDC/IIDA Vancouver Leaders Breakfast

Vancouver, BC – February 20, 2014 – Interior Designers of Canada (IDC) and the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) presented landscape architect Cornelia Hahn Oberlander with the prestigious Leadership Award of Excellence. The award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to the design industry, was presented at the fourth annual Vancouver Leaders Breakfast at the Vancouver Convention Centre on February 20, 2014. Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival founder, Christopher Gaze, delivered the keynote address.  

“Cornelia Hahn Oberlander is a true design thought leader,” said Sandy Fraser, Registered Interior Designer, principal of Fraser Design and interior design educator at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. “She has transformed project outcomes and user experiences through her life-long interest in collaboration, environment, and people. She is an inspiration to us all in the design profession.”

Cornelia Hahn Oberlander is recognized as a national treasure in Canada. She has been creating innovative landscapes for more than sixty years that bring together the art and science of the profession. She is a pioneer in integrated design and has always encouraged collaboration between the landscapes, buildings and interiors professions. Oberlander has set new standards of excellence through her socially conscious and environmentally responsible designs. Grounded in extensive research, her work has had a unique and lasting impact on the welfare of society and the environment. Through careful consideration of the human factor within all living and built environments, her designs contribute to both the internal and external atmosphere and experience of the building. She is a leader in researching green solutions.

“It is terrific to be acknowledged by the interior design community in such a meaningful way,” said Oberlander about receiving the award. “I am honoured to receive this leadership award and dream of a day where elected officials and design-related disciplines work together from the very beginning of each project.”  

As keynote speaker, Christopher Gaze was compelling and Shakespeare-articulate. He spoke about the unique challenges of leading a creative team.
