    IDC's Industry Sales Professional Course Calgary

    This custom course has been tailored exclusively to meet the needs of IDC's architecture and design industry sales professionals. This one-day, practically-oriented course features Q & A sessions with panels of registered interior designers and architects, drawn from boutique and large design firms serving various design sectors.

    In a series of frank and informal exchanges, these leading designers will deliver helpful tips on how their studios operate as well as how to join their network of trusted industry resources.

    We are delighted to have, as our Moderator, Glen Brewer from IDC's Industry Committee. Glen is an executive with over 25 years experience in the tile, floor covering and construction industries. He is a recognized expert in the ceramic and porcelain tile sector, and brings extensive expertise gained in multiple industry sectors including executive management. He is the President of Midgley Tecnica, a distributor in the porcelain tile industry, and a member of several boards including IDC's Industry and Trade Development Boards.

    Krista E. Paine, RID, RSE, NCIDQ

    Krista Paine is a registered interior designer, red seal carpenter, and design/build educator. She has been honored with multiple awards locally and internationally for her architectural and interior design. She is a member of local, provincial, and international boards and committees and is a judge for multiple housing awards of excellence programs. Krista has been honored to be published internationally outlining her innate belief that design's intention must be to better ones way of life.

    BOUTIQUE and RESIDENTIAL DESIGN FIRMS PANEL
    10 - 11 a.m.

    What are some of the most effective tips about how to go about building lasting, mutually-beneficial working relationships with registered interior designers? What are designers looking for when they receive a visit from an industry sales representative? What are their main pressures and pain points, and how can industry representatives help to solve those to deliver added value? How do designers like to be sold to, and what completely turns them off? These questions, and more, will be answered during this frank session.

    Founder of studio | ru interior design; a full service interior design firm operating in Calgary, Edmonton, and Kelowna. They specialize in high-end custom new build and renovation projects, along with hospitality and light commercial projects.

    Ursala Baig, Associate Interior Designer, Mckinley Burkart, IDC, IDA, BAID, NCIDQ

    With over 13 years of professional experience, Ursala has built an extensive design portfolio which includes a vast range of project types. Her specialty is developing high concept retail and hospitality projects ranging from boxing studios, concert venues, and retail concepts in the cannabis sector.  Most notably, Ursala specializes in leading and developing design standard for global retail activations for brands such as Budweiser and has recently completed the global roll out of over 10 brew pubs around the world for Goose Island Beer Company. Ursala brings a balance of vision and technical expertise to every project, with inspired designs that are grounded in attention to detail and strong project leadership skills. Her passion for world travel fuels her creative process and leads to a distinct project vision that is well researched, Immersive, and unexpected.

    Ana Cummings, Owner & Principal, ANA Interiors

    For over 10 years, Ana Cummings has designed and meticulously staged model homes for high profile Calgary builders and developers. Her private clients include busy professionals with families or the newly singled; vacation home, aviation and yacht owners; and empty nesters. She is available to work internationally, and is currently working with clients in the Caribbean.

    Kerri Peyton, Peyton Licensed Interior Design 

    For more than a decade, Principal Kerri Peyton has been designing successful commercial interiors throughout western Canada – spaces for working, dining, shopping, traveling and living. Following tenure with some of Calgary’s leading interior design firms, Kerri launched Peyton Licensed Interior Design Inc. in 2012.

    LARGE DESIGN and NATIONAL ACCOUNT FIRMS ROUND PANEL

    How do large interior design firms operate, internally? What are their pain points, and how can sales representatives secure appointments to meet with their teams, to help provide solutions to those same problems? During this Q & A panel session, hear from four senior interior designers about what they need from sales professionals, and how best to go about working with them in order to become a trusted resource they are likely to call on.

    Angela Stinson, Director of Store Development, Simons

    Interior designer with broad experience in commercial interiors. Focus on strategic planning,programming, design development and implementation of retail store projects.

    Learn from veteran architects the ins and outs of their working processes and preferences when collaborating with A+D professionals. This thought-provoking panel brings experience, insight and connections.

    PANELISTS:

    David Down, Architect, Chief Urban Designer, City of Calgary

    David Down is Senior Architect and Chief Urban Designer with The City of Calgary.  He joined The City in 2005 with a mandate to advocate for higher city standards of architecture and urban design.  Prior to coming to the City of Calgary, David was principal of his own award-winning architectural firm (Down + Livesey Architects).  He holds a MArch degree from the University of Calgary and is LEED accredited.  David is a registered member (and Past President) of the Alberta Association of Architects, a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, and an Adjunct Professor to the University of Calgary Faculty of Environmental Design.  He speaks regularly about the challenges of and opportunities for urbanism in Calgary and is a confirmed advocate for the design of great cities.

    Chris Hardwicke, Principal, Urban Design, O2 Planning

    As a principal with O2, Chris Hardwicke manages the firm’s Design Studio. He is a registered professional planner, a member of the Royal Architecture Institute of Canada and an urban designer with over 20 years of experience. He has achieved international recognition as a Fellow of the Forum for Urban Design in New York; a Recognized Practitioner in Urban Design in the UK; and, as a member of the Project for Public Spaces Leadership Committee and the Council for Canadian Urbanism. Chris is guided by the principle that urbanism is a vehicle of social change and renewal. This philosophy extends from the design of public places to embracing the broader principles of healthy cities.

    Jay Boyce, Architect, AAA, AIBC, MRAIC, Associate MTA | Urban Design Architecture Interior Design

    An architect with an interest in urbanism, Jay believes architecture should be inherently tied to enriching the human experience and contribute holistically to the urban fabric of our cities. His passion for design and place making is complemented by an active pursuit in how architecture can invigorate the city. He has served as Chair of the Advisory Design Panel for the City of North Vancouver and brings with him expanded knowledge in the mixed-use, institutional, and urban design projects. “I believe the spaces and places we create should aspire to embody a uniquely engaging experience.” With over 17 years of design and technical experience, Jay has practiced in both small and large-scale practices across Western Canada. He leads collaboratively to ensure the successful delivery through all aspects of each project.

    INTERIOR DESIGN - WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW!
    3 - 4 p.m.

    Learn the ins and outs of interior design from former IDC board member Kathy Johnston Umbach. She will help you understand why working with a qualified interior designer is imperative. As well as the possible involvement of industry representatives in preparing or influencing different forms of contract and contact documents, together their practical implementation within the construction procedure, specifications and typical project processes. Kathy will dive into the emerging trends in the industry and answer questions that you may have.

    For over 30 years, Kathy Johnston Umbach, an award-winning and published Licensed Interior Designer, has been helping organizations create inspiring, high-performing environments that improve their bottom line. Kathy aligns culture, brand and space to empower teams to be their best. Working with stellar organizations throughout Canada, Kathy’s focus is workplace environments. Her skills have extended to medical clinics, day cares and light industrial facilities.
