DESIGN & DETAIL MAKE THE DIFFERENCE IN BONAVISTA: REVITALIZING AN OLD FISHING TOWN
    10 - 11 a.m.| 1 IDCEC hour (HSW)

With the collapse of the centuries-old commercial cod fishery in 1992, many Newfoundland fishing towns began to look to tourism as a means of survival.  The Bonavista Historic Townscape Foundation was formed in 1998 on the premise that chasing tourists is not the answer.  Remaining an authentic, working, albeit smaller, fishing town - one that invests in protection and promotion of its long history and abundant heritage resources - is the better route to economic revitalization.  That approach - investing in the town rather than in tourism attractions - has succeeded to a considerable degree; today Bonavista is heralded in some quarters as a model for other fishing towns trying to revitalize.  The reasons for its success are varied, but close observers know the Foundation's commitment to good planning, design, and attention to detail, has been instrumental in creating the "authenticity" it considers essential in the restoration and redevelopment of heritage buildings and the cultural landscape.

PRESENTERS: DAVID BRADLEY, ARCHIVIST WITH MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY'S MARITIME HISTORY ARCHIVE

Archivist with Memorial University’s Maritime History Archive, former chair of the Board of Governors of the Heritage Canada Foundation, former president of the Newfoundland Historical Society, founding/current chair of the Association of Heritage Industries of Newfoundland and Labrador, an umbrella group of provincial heritage organizations president of the Bonavista Historical Society and chair of its affiliate, the Bonavista Historic Townscape Foundation, which created and continues to implement the Bonavista Historic Townscape Management Plan.  Much of the work at Bonavista relates directly to the conservation, restoration, redevelopment and adaptive reuse of heritage buildings, and large scale streetscape development projects.

CREATING AN INNOVATION HUB AND CREATIVE CENTRE IN ST JOHN'S
    11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.| 1 IDCEC hour (HSW)

With a little bit of collaboration and vision, we can turn underused heritage buildings into lean, mean, place-making machines. A mix of public arts and innovation space could embody this goal by providing a place for artists and small business owners to meet, work, share, and produce. There will be hyperlocal synergies and paradigm shifts being leveraged like crazy! Add an arts collective to spearhead the design requirements along with architects and a start-up focused group like "Common Ground" who have experience with shared workspace creation and you get the opportunity our City has been waiting for. It would solidify us as a creative capital, fostering an economy centred around the importance of downtown as the place to encourage revitalization.

PRESENTERS: COUNCILLOR DAVE LANE, CITY OF ST JOHN'S AND GRANT GENOVA, FRESH FRUIT ARCHITECTURE

Dave Lane is a Councillor at Large in St. John's, and is focused primarily on economic development, public engagement, supporting start-ups and small businesses, improving cycling, strengthening arts support, and protecting built heritage. Today, aside from his role on Council, Dave leads a significant project in partnership with Common Ground Co-working to adapt several historic downtown buildings into a “creative innovation hub” for entrepreneurs, artists and other self-starters. Dave has served on the boards and committees of the Newfoundland Historic Trust, the St. John’s Board of Trade, and the St. John's Northwest Rotary Music Festival, to name a few.

    DESIGN MAKES EVERYTHING BETTER
    1:30 - 2:30 p.m.| 1 IDCEC hour

The corner stone of design thinking is founded on a deep understanding of human behaviour – problem-solving with the end user in mind.  Today more than ever, human-centered insight-driven design is a critical strategic tool necessary to radically transform businesses and communities in this hyper-connected, rapidly evolving global society.  This talk will share case studies demonstrating how insight-driven design resonates profoundly with people to powerfully reinvent how companies – and communities - do business, build their brand, and secure sustainable, long term growth.
