This seminar will focus on accessibility requirements and standards - including the City of Ottawa's Accessibility Design Standards - as these relate to interior spaces. Topics addressed will include barrier free washrooms, including the difference between UTRs (universal toilet rooms) and barrier-free washrooms. The session will also explore interior access routes, handrails, guardrails, ramps and stairs and their correct use within interior environments, as well as regulations governing doors and door widths, and tactical walking surface indicators.

    KNOW YOUR PORCELAIN
    12 - 1 p.m. | 1 IDCEC hour (HSW)

Porcelain tile is a beautiful, strong, durable and ideal surface in commercial as well as residential applications. Certified porcelain excels as a versatile finish material both indoors and out - from kitchens to baths, poolside to hospital hallway. Porcelain tile meets universal design and this presentation will review the latest information on using the dynamic coefficient of friction (DCOF) vs the static coefficient of friction (SCOF) for tile surfaces that meet ADA criteria. Attendees will review the manufacturing of tiles, the use of recycled content, tile grading, markings and tile applications, and numerous examples of the different types of porcelain will expand potential design toolkits. Mastering the art of selecting and specifying porcelain tile, designers can comfortably choose porcelain tile to provide durability and sustainability for their projects.

PRESENTER: GLEN BREWER, PRESIDENT, MIDGLEY TECNICA

Glen Brewer is a Senior Entrepreneurial Executive with over 25 years experience in the tile, floor covering and construction-related industries. DOING WELL BY DOING GOOD: DEMYSTIFYING THE OPTIONS
    2 - 3 p.m. | 1 IDCEC hour (HSW)

Unlike any other entity, corporations have the power of influence to change how we do business and to make impactful change. "Doing well by doing good" - the knowledge that businesses can thrive by contributing to the greater good, while making profits - can manifest in several types of models. A circular economy, a B corp, a charity and a social enterprise can all support this mission, but each does it differently and in their own way. This course will discuss and compare these various models and help provide clarity to the consumer so they can support corporations with their own purchasing powers to help change the way business is done.

    PRESENTER: JENNIFER MACNEIL, INTERFACE INC.

Jennifer MacNeill, a graduate of interior design from Humber College has been in the design and commercial flooring industry for over 35 years. She has been an account executive with Interface in Atlantic Canada since 1996 and has been a certified CEU presenter for many years. This is her first presentation in Ottawa.
