FABRICS FOR PERFORMANCE SHADING: A NEW METHODOLOGY FOR DAYLIGHTING DESIGN
    10:30 - 11:30 a.m. | 1 IDCEC hour (HSW)

This course is targeted towards specifiers and members of the design community to help better educate them on the effects that shade fabrics have on building performance. Today, fabrics are typically selected based on aesthetics and a designer’s past experience, which results in compromised energy savings and occupant comfort. Research is establishing that fabric properties, particularly openness factor, visible transmittance, and solar reflectance, play a huge role in glare reduction, daylight autonomy, and view preservation. The key to maximizing energy savings and occupant comfort is finding the right balance between each project’s parameters and priorities. With the research, metrics, and data, this presentation will drive architects and designers to select fabric as a key component of the building performance system, as opposed to a furnishing. This new methodology will give the architectural community the ability to optimize the design of their shading system based on performance (glare, daylight, and view) and aesthetics.

She is a certified CEU educator currently teaching daylight autonomy and the new performance shading course.

DOING WELL BY DOING GOOD: DEMYSTIFYING THE OPTIONS
    11:45 a.m. - 12:45 p.m. | 1 IDCEC hour (HSW)

Unlike any other entity, corporations have the power of influence to change how we do business and to make impactful change. "Doing well by doing good" - the knowledge that businesses can thrive by contributing to the greater good, while making profits - can manifest in several types of models. A circular economy, a B corp, a charity and a social enterprise all can support this mission, but each does it differently and it their own way. This course will discuss and compare these various models and help provide clarity to the consumer so they can support corporations with their own purchasing powers to help change the way business is done.

    PRESENTER: JENNIFER MACNEIL, INTERFACE INC.

Jennifer MacNeill, a graduate (1977) of Interior Design from Humber College has been in the design and commercial flooring industry for over 35 years. Jennifer has been an account executive for Interface in Atlantic Canada since 1996. She has been awarded the Interface Canada Account Executive of the Year in 1999 and again in 2012. Jennifer is also the extremely proud recipient of the 2010 Ray C Anderson Sustainability Sales Award. And in 2013 Interior Designers of Nova Scotia named Jennifer Sales Professional of the Year. Jennifer was a founding board member and chair of the Atlantic Chapter of the CaGBC. She has also chaired the organizing committee for BuildGreenAtlantic and in 2011 was a nominee for the CaGBC National Industry Award.
