    2016 Manitoba Design Exposition and Catch up on CEUs

    EVENT DATE: October 13, 2016

    The MDE is a one-day trade show targeted towards the design community of Manitoba, sponsored by PIDIM. The show profiles the latest products and services and provides an opportunity to bring the design and vendor communities together for an informal, social gathering that includes valuable education. This event is the ideal opportunity to network with industry professionals and review the newest design products.

    UNDERSTANDING ADAPTABLE WORKPLACE SOLUTIONS

    1 IDCEC hour (HSW) | 8:30 - 9:30 a.m.

    This presentation will explore the design and business benefits of modular interior construction, including the enhancements which pre-engineered office interiors can deliver for the design schedule resulting in positive design and business benefits for the client. Expand your knowledge of re-manufactured and pre-engineered architectural, technological and products made with mass customization, and how to use them to create a well-designed, efficient, adaptable and inexpensive corporate environment that represents a tangible, performing business asset.

    PRESENTER: CALVIN LEE, LEED, HAWORTH

    Calvin Lee, Haworth's National Director of Architectural Interiors - Canada Calvin-Lee-Haworthis a seasoned professional specializing in architectural interiors, business development and relationship management, as well as the strategic positioning of architectural products. He completed undergraduate studies in Environmental Studies (Architecture) at the University of Manitoba, and graduate studies in Environmental Design at the University of Calgary. Calvin brings extensive expertise within the commercial real estate sector, where he frequently consults on optimum business strategy to combine cost, value and performance including the impact on design, bidding and other scopes of work. He regularly presents the concept of high performance interiors to leading architecture and design firms, and to professional organizations across North America including AIA, OAA, and ARIDO conferences and chapters.


    WALKING ON AIR: BUILDING ON THE FOUNDATION FOR HIGH-PERFORMANCE WORKSPACE

    Is it realistic for designers to plan to combine sustainable construction methods with an integrated design approach while operating within reduced overall project costs and often elevated clients' demands for optimum occupant comfort? This presentation wll argue that it is, while introducing the concept of underfloor air as a viable alternative to overhead systems. Topics addressed will include how UFAD impacts LEED applications and improves indoor air quality, and how separate offices can have individual user control for improved comfort and productivity.

    NEW SUSTAINABLE AND AESTHETIC OPTIONS IN FINISHING BORDERS

    1 IDCEC hour (HSW) I 10:45 - 11:45 a.m.

    How can you be sure to select wall base options that that are aesthetically pleasing, delivering the requisite performance, within budget, while also contributing to the project’s sustainability objectives, wherever walls meet floor?

    This seminar will explain the difference between toe and toeless styles of wall base, as well as optimum applications for each. Learn, first-hand how to compare popular wall base materials to select for performance, sustainability and cost, including new bio-based and wood alternative wall base solutions for healthcare and commercial applications.

    Thomas Fulcher is Regional Business Manager for Johnsonite Tarkett, Thomas-Fulcher-Tarketthaving been with the company since 2009. He is passionate about his profession, and is actively involved in working with interior designers in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta, helping them to identify and select the optimum rubber flooring products to meet the exacting design, comfort, sustainability and life-safety requirements of each diverse client project.

    BALANCED BUILDING ACOUSTICS

    1 IDCEC hour (HSW) | 1:15 - 2:15 p.m.

    Learn from an expert the Science of Building Acoustics – how sound works and how to control noise within enclosed spaces, improving comfort and productivity for the building’s occupants. Explore speech intelligibility and privacy, and noise control factors including noise criteria and reduction coefficients. Expand your awareness of ceiling substrates and partition assemblies that can positively or negatively impact noise control within enclosed spaces, ensuring that you select the appropriate ceiling material for every building application.

    CGC Architectural Representative Gale Leblanc is a passionate champion of design educationGale-Leblanc whose multiple design credentials include a Bachelors Degree in Interior Design from The University of Manitoba, NCIDQ certification, Certified Technical Representative (CTR/CSC) and LEED Green Associate status. She is a recent recipient of USG's President’s Club award, presented to an elite group of high performers within the USG/CGC group. Gale is a core member of CGC's Canada-wide architectural team, empowered to deliver a range of education presentations and technical industry briefings focusing on acoustical ceilings and gypsum assemblies. She is a volunteer Industry Member at Large with the Interior Designers of Alberta (IDA) Executive Board, and volunteer Executive Council member with Construction Specifications Canada (CSC) Calgary Chapter, representing Interior Design.

     

    FASHION AND INTERIORS: HOW JHANE BARNES DESIGNS
    1 non-IDCEC hour | 2:30 - 3:30 p.m.

    Renowned American designer Jhane Barnes - famous for her forward-facing fashion and eyewear collections, and extensive ranges of textiles, flooring, and furniture - believes good design is that which inspires, challenges, and endures.

    Jhane started her menswear design company at age 21, fresh out of the NY Fashion Institute of Technology and, four years later, became the youngest person and first woman to win the prestigious COTY fashion industry award, recognized for her new silhouettes and modern details.

    She has collaborated with Tandus Flooring since 1996, using her math and digital approach to change the way modular carpet floor tiles are designed and installed.

    PRESENTER:JHANE BARNES

    In 1978, Barnes bought her first loom, and quickly became known for her innovative textiles, leading to her entrée into the contract textile market. In addition to her many achievements in fashion, carpet, and textiles, Jhane's career highlights include designing the popular Duet chair, and Martini and Otera tables (included in the Sourcebook of Modern Design) for Bernhardt. Since 2006, she has also been designing eyewear for Kenmark Group. Unique, fashion-inspired textiles that were her trademark at Knoll continue today in her partnership with Anzea Textiles, Lumicor, Takeform and LDI.
