    2014 Alberta Building Code Fundamentals

    The 2014 Alberta Building Code Fundamentals seminar presents an overview of the ABC and is mainly suitable for persons who are new at Building Code applications. This seminar may also be appropriate for persons who are looking to brush up on the Code basics.

    The seminar begins with an overview of the ABC format and definitions. The remainder of the seminar is focused on Division B, Part 3. Throughout the day, participants will complete Building Code analysis studies on various topics.

    Please note it is highly recommended that attendees bring a copy (electronic of paper) of the Alberta Building Code 2014 to this seminar.


    OVERVIEW

    Description of objective-based code format, Volumes 1 and 2:

    • Overview of Divisions A, Parts 1, 2, 3 and 4
    • Review of Division C, including administrative and legal provisions
    • High level descriptions and explanations of alternative solutions

    Key Concepts & Principal Code definitions explained in detail, examples include:

    • Major occupancy vs. subsidiary occupancy
    • Difference between building area, gross area and floor area
    • Public corridor vs. corridor used by the public
    • Difference between fire separation and fire-resistance rating

    Fire Separations and Compartmentation, examples include:

    • Structural fire-resistance
    • Classifying buildings as per 3.2.2. Articles
    • Public corridors
    • Special Hazards

    OCCUPANT LOAD AND EXIT CAPACITY CALCULATIONS 

    Egress requirements:

    • Travel distance
    • Egress doors
    • Door swing & sliding doors
    • Distance between exits vs. distance between egress doors
    • Aisle requirements

    Washroom review:

    • Washroom requirements for all occupancies
    • Washroom calculations
     
      

    PRESENTER: Kim Karn, Building Code & Life Safety Consulting, Kimberly Karn Consulting Inc.

    Kim brings over 14 years of experience working with Provincial, National & International Building Codes and regulatory standards. Kim refined her skills as a Code consultant in Ontario and subsequently Alberta with Larden Muniak Consulting Inc. for 10 years. Kim then provided in-house consulting services for Riddell Kurcazba Architecture for 3-½ years before starting her own consulting firm, Kimberly Karn Consulting Inc., in October 2015.

    With this knowledge, Kim has provided analysis of compliance for existing and proposed building designs, focusing on life safety and fire protection. Kim has performed Code reviews, alternative solutions, audits and life safety studies for many projects including, high rise office, multi-family residential, hotels, hospitals, care facilities, arenas, exhibition halls & trade centres, as well as many industrial buildings.

    Utilizing analytical problem-solving and negotiation skills, Kim builds consensus between design & construction teams and local authorities to implement variances that meet the intent of the Code and the clients’ needs. Kim is experienced at developing critical cost-effective solutions for unexpected complications that arise on-site during construction projects.

    With her expertise, Kim has developed and presented many continuing education seminars related to Building Codes, fire protection and life safety subject matter since 2004. Kim has presented accredited seminars for Alberta WoodWorks!/Canadian Wood Council, BuildEx, Canadian Home Builders Association (Alberta), Safety Codes Council, IIDEX, ARIDO as well as various architectural and design firms.
