    2014 Alberta Building Code Changes and More in Edmonton (6 IDCEC hours + HSW)

    This full-day seminar will address various topics from the 2014 Alberta Building Code (ABC) and focus on areas of interest to the interior design community.
    It is highly recommended that attendees bring a hard copy of the Alberta Building Code 2014 to this seminar. Please note that current delivery time is estimated at 2-3 weeks.


    An overview of the 2014 ABC format as well as a review of the technical changes and significant editorial changes to Division B, Part 3 of the 2014 ABC. Participants will acquire a clearer sense of the nature and extent of the changes.

    Some of the technical changes that will be reviewed in this seminar include: 

    • New occupancy classification: Group B, Division 3 – Care major occupancy
    • Six storey wood-frame construction
    • Barrier-free changes
    • Hazardous area requirements
    • Plumbing facility & washroom updates
    • Child care and daycare facilities
    • Strata designation
    • Asbestos management and abetment


    The seminar continues after lunch and the following topics will be reviewed:

    • Fire separations: This session will include a review of common fire rated wall types using the Underwriters Laboratories of Canada (ULC) Fire-Resistance manual and website, as well as Appendix D of the 2014 ABC.
    • Mezzanines: A review on how to classify and calculate a mezzanine, review the “10%” and “40%” rules and understand fire separation and egress requirements.
    • Door hardware & security: An overview of the use of electromagnetic locks vs. electric strikes in means of egress and exits, blue pull stations vs. red pull stations for door release and new vs. existing conditions.

With this knowledge, Kim has provided analysis of compliance for existing and proposed building designs, focusing on life safety and fire protection. Kim refined her skills as a Code consultant in Ontario and Alberta, at Larden Muniak Consulting Inc., through managing and expanding the business. Currently, Kim is employed at Riddell Kurczaba and provides consulting services for in-house projects as well as external clients and projects.
