    IDC Seminars: Victoria - Brush Up on the 2012 BC Building Code (6 IDCEC hours: HSW)

    8:30 to 10:30 a.m.  Fire Protection Principles Underlying the Requirements of the 2012 British Columbia Building Code

    This full day of code starts with an introductory level course intended to provide participants with a basic understanding to the background of BC Building Code as well as the principles which underlie Part 3 and Part 9 of fire protection and life safety requirements. The discussion of fire and life safety concepts has relevance to Parts 3 and 9 of the BC Code.

    This course is appropriate for individuals who have had little or no exposure to the BC Building Code, or for those who wish to improve their comfort level with understanding the code.

    Topics to be explained and discussed include:

    • Layout and outline of the subject matter addressed in the BC Code
    • Identifying divisions
    • Parts and sections
    • Reasons why the BC code governs the design and construction of buildings
    • Major occupancy classifications
    • Fire resistance ratings
    • Fire protection ratings
    • Fire separations
    • Closures in fire separations
    • Occupant load determinations
    • Exit capacity determinations
    • Travel distance
    • Flame spread ratings of interior finishes

    11 to 1 p.m.  Understanding and Applying Part 3 Requirements of the 2012 British Columbia Building Code to Building Designs

    This intermediate level course assumes participants have a reasonable familiarity with the layout and requirements of the BC Building Code. This course will build on a basic understanding of the BC Building Code.

    Topics to be explained and discussed include:

    • Mezzanine and interconnected floor spaces
    • Stairwells within multifloor single tenant space
    • Single tenant floors as it relates to public exiting and elevator lobbies
    • Multiple tenant floor design
    • Public corridor design including design for means of egress
    • Egress from suites
    • Egress from mezzanines
    • Processes and uses of floor areas
    • Protection of areas with a barrier free path of travel and required protection for sensitive occupancies
    • Vertical and horizontal compartmentalization of a building and its floor areas

    1 to 1:30 p.m. Lunch

    1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Changes to the BC Building Code

    This final seminar of the full day will cover changes to the 2012 BC Building Code related to Division A, Part 3. The seminar will highlight the differences between the 2006 edition of the BCBC and the 2012 edition as well as the rationale for these changes.

    Note: Attendees should bring their own personal copy of the 2012 BC Building Code. Highlighters and post it notes are also recommended.

    Leszek Muniak, of Sereca Larden Muniak Inc., has been ARIDO’s building code consultant for more than 10 years. Sereca Larden Muniak specializes in the development and presentation of building code-related seminars and courses. Les has acted as a consultant for hundreds of projects and a wide variety of clients. Many of these projects required the development of innovative fire protection and code compliance approaches for building rehabilitation and new construction. He has served on Ontario and national building code committees. Les has also developed fire-analysis computer techniques, conducted fire investigations, acted as a consultant for legal counsel, and developed and presented training courses.
