    IDC Seminars: Catch Up on CEUs: Legal Issues and Changes to the BC Code (up to 5 IDCEC hours)

    Seminar #1: 12:30 - 2:30 pm Legal Issues Facing Interior Designers (2 IDCEC hours-General)

    This two hour seminar will offer BC interior designers practical information on the legal issues encountered when running a design practice.The content covered will include an overview of the legal landscape, types of business formations, the importance of a contract clearly stating the scope of work, regulatory and building code issues and dispute resolution. In addition, as it is mandatory for IDIBC members to carry liability insurance, professional negligence and insurance law basics will be addressed. There will be additional time for an in-depth question and answer session.

    Owen Pawson, Partner, Miller Thomson

    Owen is a partner with Miller Thomson, a Vancouver based law firm, practicing as a solicitor in construction law. He assists governments, crown corporations as well as construction companies, architects, engineers and interior designers to identify issues and resolve conflicts in construction. Owen also helps commercial arrangements for traditional design-tender-build projects through to major engineer, procure and construct facilities and public/private partnerships projects in the devopment process. In this regard, Owen has been involved in preparation of procurement processes and complex contracts necessary to implement major transportation infrastructure projects by way of design-build, P3 and EPC contracts. He also advises clients on professional liability of design and has prepared professional consulting agreements for a variety of projects.

    Seminar #2: 3 - 6 pm  Changes to the BC Building Code (3 IDCEC hours-HSW)

    This three-hour seminar will cover changes to the 2012 BC Building Code related to interiors and existing provisions that impact interiors including: flame spread ratings and test standards, combustible finishes in non-combustible buildings, exits and egress (there is a difference!), interconnected floor spaces and openings in floors and accessibility. This presentation will also include information on the Vancouver City Building Bylaw where specific requirements differ from the BC code.

    Note: Attendees can bring their own personal copy of the 2012 BC Building Code, if helpful. 

    Joseph Krevs, FP Technologist, BCQ, GHL Consultants

    Joseph Krevs is a Fire Protection Technologist with 6 years of experience at GHL and an honours graduate from the Fire Protection Engineering Technology program at Seneca College in 2006. Joseph’s experience includes working in Fire Prevention at GTAA Fire and Emergency Services where he performed inspections, reviewed plans and assisted with fire investigations. He performs Building Code reviews, site reviews, and CP (Certified Professional) Permit submissions. Joseph recently received the title of BCQ (Building Code Qualified); he is one of the first two BOABC members to achieve this designation while working in the private sector as a Code Consultant.

    Wendy Morrison, AScT, BCQ, GHL Consultants

    Wendy Morrison is a Building Technologist with 9 years of experience at GHL, is registered with ASTTBC as an Applied Science Technologist, and is a member of the Building Officials Association of BC (BOABC). Wendy has a multi-disciplinary background in administration, 10 years’ experience in the legal field, and has completed studies in Public Administration and Political Science. Wendy holds the title of BCQ (Building Code Qualified); she is one of the first two BOABC members to achieve this designation while working in the private sector as a Code Consultant.
