In this hyper‐stimulated market, the public often decides what’s newsworthy and for how long. Getting media coverage is no longer about who you know, fancy photos or how fast you can churn out those press releases. Today, content‐starved media are constantly on the lookout for thought leadership, innovation, controversy and anything else that will pop from the clutter. This panel of media professionals will discuss the keys to generating media attention for interior design firms and how to stand out from the competition.

*This presentation is part of a breakfast/networking event held from 10 – 11:45 a.m., presented by Floform. This is a free event, but you must be registered to attend. Registration will be on a first come, first serve basis starting September 18 at 10 a.m. Pacific time.

    3 - 4 p.m.

    Blair Satterfield, Associate Professor UBC
Marc Swackhamer, Associate Professor of Architecture at University of Minnesot

Principals Blair Satterfield and Marc Swackhamer discuss how HouMinn Practice is the result of a decidedly non-practice and non-academic approach to research and design. HouMinn is a group of self-admitted “grazers” who sample from a wide range of interests and media (video games, movies, anime, Japanese culture, books, newspapers, music, pod-casts, graphics, science, technology). They believe that generally curious people have a built-in proclivity towards “switching fields.” This discontent for stasis and boundary is pivotal for life as an effective designer. HouMinn Practice (Formerly slvDESIGN) was founded in 1998 in Houston, Texas. Today, they stand on the shoulders of an expanding collaborative network of design professionals, artists, engineers, scientists and students who contribute vital knowledge of architecture, construction, fabrication and craft to all of our projects.

    7 - 8 p.m.

Michael Green, Architect, Michael Green Architecture

The growing, handling, production, delivery and experience of food has had an enormous influence on the culture of design. This past year, 19 UBC students spent two weeks camping in an orchard on the Naramata Bench designing and building fruit stands. Their projects told the stories of the lives of the people that feed us. Michael Green will speak about the lessons they learned and how these lessons influence design.
