The Frame - Art in Context

Merging Works of Art into the Ambiance of Design

This talk will cover the evolution and development of framing for works of art from custom treatments to mass produced frames. Criteria for choosing frame styles and materials as complementary to both artwork and decorative scheme will be discussed. The craft of framing will include constructing a frame, mats and mat decoration, gilding and other specialized finishes will be offered as a comprehensive guide to the professional designer.

Also discussed will be framing of objects and ephemera, works on paper and works on canvas as well as photography. Consideration for display and hanging will cover hanging single feature pieces or a grouping and include examples of combining framed artwork with objects.

Safety for hanging and care of frames and artwork will complete the presentation.

The lecture will use a power-point presentation format and have hands-on samples of various combinations, finishes and constructions.
