Abstraction - Pattern, Shape and Spirit

Modernist Art - the Move Away from Realism

Modernism is described as the deliberate departure from the depiction of subjects in a realistic fashion. The talk will explore the use of innovative forms of expression to clarify the many styles and movements of art from 1890 to 1950.

Included in this presentation are the distinguishing characteristics of Impressionism, Post Impressionism, Fauvism, Expressionism, Cubism, Dada, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism/Action Art, and Colour Field painting. A PowerPoint presentation will provide selected works by artists who pioneered new ways to express feelings and ideas and creating abstractions rather than a literal representation of their subject matter.

Along with the overview of Modernism this program will include a visual presentation on methods of Stylizing Contemporary Art by modifying, distorting and exaggerating the elements of design.

The attendee will leave the program with a printed explanation of terms that will serve as a personal reference or for designers wishing to help their clients describe just what they are looking for when choosing non-representational works of art.

Artist and best selling author (Watercolour Painting Outside the Lines), Linda Kemp (OSC, CSPWC, SAA) is a full time artist and continues an active schedule of lecturing in symposia and workshops throughout North America and in Europe. Her award winning paintings are in private, public and corporate collections around the world, including the Royal Collection, Windsor Castle, UK and the private collection of HRH The Prince of Wales.
