    Best Practices to Minimize Business and Legal Risk: Case Studies ( 2 ARIDO CEUs)

    Interior designers face business, ethical and legal issues on a regular basis .Often, the decisions made during interactions with clients, other designers, ARIDO and the public can have a significant impact on a designers' professional reputation.

    All Registered and Intern members of ARIDO are expected to follow the ARIDO Standards of Practice. This two-hour seminar will review some of the key Standards using case studies and an interactive discussion. Examples include: When is a designer crossing the line with respect to incentives? Who owns the copyright in a design worked on by a team?  And, what is the best professional approach to take when asked to critique another designers work?

    These case study discussions will teach you how to best implement practices that align with the ARIDO Standards of Practice. These practices could also help protect you and your business. This seminar and discussion is valuable for all Registered and Intern interior designers. 

    Denise Robertson
    Denise is Chair of the Mills and Mills LLP Design Law Group. Her practice is focused on private business, corporate and regulatory law. Denise acts for interior designers and firms on matters relating to:

    Contract Drafting and Review, Protection of Intellectual Property Rights, Contractor and Employment Agreements, Dispute Resolution, Regulatory and Building Code, Compliance, and Business Formation including: incorporations, partnerships or setting up sole proprietorships.

    Denise has authored a number of articles for ARIDO and IDC including articles on contracts, complaints and discipline, copyright and professional liability. She is a frequent speaker on topics of interest to design professionals, including starting a business, working with other professionals, minimizing legal risk, protecting designs and the importance of using an Interior Design Services Agreement with all clients.

    Mills & Mills LLP is a full service law firm established 125 years ago. In addition to her own practice, Denise has access to legal assistance in a variety of areas, including real estate, family, intellectual property, litigation and estates.

    Accessibility Requirements based on the Ontario Building Code (AR120) (0.2 IDCEC CEUs)

    This two-hour seminar summarizes the key design criteria for barrier-free design as regulated by the Ontario Building Code with a focus on common design elements. Learn about the requirements associated with a path of travel throughout a building and where the path of travel is not required. Recent OBC changes that address barrier-free requirements for residential occupancies will be explained. Additionally, barrier-free washroom design, barrier-free designated fixed seating, and a conceptual introduction to extensive renovations will be also be reviewed. This seminar will also present a comparison of like technical requirements of the OBC and the draft Built Environment Standard, forming part of the AODA 2005 legislation. Lastly, this seminar will provide a brief introduction to Facility Accessibility Design Standards, with the intention of providing an awareness of their existence.

    Lisa Miller 
    Leber Rubes Inc. (LRI) is a Professional Engineering firm that specializes in Building Code consulting, including accessibility, and fire protection engineering. It is the largest and oldest engineering firm in Canada that specializes exclusively in these services. Lisa Miller is an Associate at LRI with more than eight years experience with Canadian and International Codes. Ms. Miller has designed and delivered numerous Building Code and Fire Safety courses. She is a member of the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists [OACETT] and a member of the Sheridan College Interior Design Program Advisory Committee.
