In this hyper-stimulated market, the public decides what’s newsworthy and for how long. Getting media coverage is no longer about who you know, fancy photos or how fast you can churn out those press releases. Today, content-starved media are constantly on the lookout for thought leadership, controversy and anything else that will pop from the clutter. This one-hour webinar will explore examples of how courage and vision have become the key to generating public and media attention for interior design firms. This webinar will also consider the risks associated with such attention in the digital age and how they can best be managed.

This one-hour marketing webinar will illuminate how every email, proposal, meeting, phone call, post and tweet represents an opportunity to communicate value about an interior design firm. Doing so naturally, without sounding promotional or self-focused, often presents a challenge. This session will begin by objectively illustrating the difference between a winning and a weak ‘what’s in it for my client’ position and then quickly move onto its application. The next task will be to challenge deeply seated theories about how to approach communication tools, old and new, with a fresh perspective and relevant examples. Participants will take away new ideas about how to communicate value at every ‘touch point’ and how to train their teams to amplify this effect.

OAA Seminar: What is in the 2012 OBC SB-10 Update? Ontario Gets Serious about Energy Use in New Buildings

The Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing OBC SB-10 updates went into effect on January 1, 2012. Since the introduction of SB-10 the Ministry has telegraphed its intent to develop the Ontario building code into a leader in building energy efficiency. To that end the SB-10 updates require new buildings to exceed the Model National Energy Code (1997) by 25%. Of course prescriptive paths are required for those not using energy modeling to achieve this performance levels. The prescriptive path is a modified implementation of ASHRAE 90.1-2010 with ASHRAE 189-2009 (189 is ASHRAE’s design standard for High Performance Green Buildings) envelope performance. This half day workshop focuses on the prescriptive path to compliance with SB-10, though some performance (energy modeling) will be discussed.

The session will introduce architects to the prescriptive requirements (90.1-2010 with 189-2009 and other SB-10 revision) now in effect under SB-10. Particular emphasis will be placed on thermal bridging and the prominence the new code places on continuous insulation in wall systems. Some common wall systems used in the marketplace which are no longer code compliant under the prescriptive path will be shown, along with example design options on how to achieve compliance. Fenestration system performance will also be reviewed under the new code requirements. Envelope performance trade-off paths will also be discussed. Finally, a brief overview of mechanical electrical requirements will be presented.

Learning Objectives:

Develop an understanding of the enclosure thermal performance requirements in the new building code

Develop an understanding on the difference between whole wall thermal performance and the nominal rated R-value of insulation installed in a wall system, as well as sources of information to determine whole wall thermal performance

Develop an understanding whole fenestration performance and sources of information in determining whole fenestration performance for project estimating

Learn about envelope trade performance to meet code requirements as well as whole building performance paths

2012 IDEC Annual Conference celebrates 50 years of advancing the interior design profession

For the past 50 years, the Interior Design Educators Council has met annually to learn, inspire, and advance the interior design profession. This year's annual conference will celebrate that rich history while focusing on the future vitality of the profession as it grows and evolves.

The conference, to be held March 19 - 22, 2012 at the Hyatt Regency on the Inner Harbor in Baltimore, MD, will feature memorabilia displays and history videos. Included in the conference schedule are two keynote presentations. On Monday evening, Jo Heinz, interior designer and managing principal of Staffelbach in Dallas, will share her vision of the future of the interior design profession. The following morning, Roz Cama, President and Principal Interior Designer of CAMA, Inc. in New Haven, CT, and author of Evidence-Based Healthcare Design, will also share insight into the future of interior design.

The insights from these two sessions will be further discussed during the IDEC Fellows Forum were conference attendees will discuss ways to share the value of interior design with the university, community, and public at large. Panelists will discuss ways interior design has been embraced outside traditional venues, ways good design has been brought to those who might not have access to it, and creative ways to advocate for the profession.

Preconference education sessions are still being planned, but already confirmed is the Journal of Interior Design writers workshop and the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) workshop. Two new interactive features at this year's conference is the Village Square Critical Issues Session, where panelists will share experience on pressing issues before opening the session to group discussion, and IDEC's first Pecha Kucha Night, a fast-paced focus on creative teaching ideas.

Each year, the organizing committee plans conference tours so that attendees can experience the culture and flavor of the host city. This year's tours include a day in Washington, DC to view the US Green Building Council LEED platinum offices and NCIDQ's new headquarters, designed by Perkins+Will where interior spaces were designed for teamwork and collaboration. Other tour options are a visit to Homewood and Evergreen, two historic Baltimore homes; and an afternoon excursion to Mount Vernon Cultural District and Fells Point Historic District.

The IDEC Annual Conference is open to everyone in the interior design industry including educators and students at design schools, colleges and universities; interior design practitioners; industry partners; and publishers.

Online conference registration and room reservation is now online at www.idec.org/events/2012.php. Registrations before February 2, 2012 are discounted to $445 versus the regular registration rate of $520 or the on-site registration fee of $595. The conference also has a non-member and student registration rates.

The Interior Design Educators Council (IDEC) is an international organization with the mission of advancing interior design education, scholarship and service. Founded in 1963, IDEC has over 850 members. The event now stretches from coast to coast and crosses borders with stops in Seattle, Vancouver, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas, Chicago and Toronto. This will be the second annual IDC/IIDA Vancouver Leaders Breakfast.

Join us and be inspired by our keynote speaker, Pixar Art Director Jay Shuster. Honouree Larry Beasley, Distinguished Practice Professor of Planning at the University of British Columbia, will receive the 2012 Leadership Award of Excellence, which recognizes his outstanding contributions to the profession of design.

With 300 attendees expected to attend, this event is not to be missed!

Speaker: Jay Shuster, Art Director at Pixar

Celebrating the recent unveiling of their new facility in Vancouver, Pixar Art Director Jay Shuster is delighted to have found a family so close to the studio's California home. Unlike other companies apt to parcel-out work overseas in order to rush a project to market, the choice of Vancouver underlines Pixar's commitment to nurturing strong ties with headquarters and maintaining the highest quality standards, drawing on the Vancouver region's pool of talented film-production professionals.

Fresh from Lucasfilm Ltd. and his work on the Star Wars prequel film trilogy, Jay joined Pixar in 2002 as a Sketch Artist. His background in industrial design and passion for all things mechanical has helped him create fun and fresh characters for films including Cars and Oscar-winners WALL-E and Toy Story 3.

As Art Director on Pixar's critically acclaimed Cars 2, his creative leadership philosophy focused on staying fresh through a unique approach and process. Jay will reveal the Pixar process through his personal experiences on the four films he has contributed to over the past nine years.

The Creativity Workshop

The Creativity Workshop in New York takes place in October and explores ways to expand creativity through a series of exercises including guided visualization technique, automatic drawing and writing, map making, memoir, and storytelling. Throughout the workshop, the exercises and talks by the instructors will focus on ways to:

Believe in your creativity
Stimulate your perceptive abilities
Find inspiration in the world around you
Discover and use images from the unconscious
Get over creative blocks and the fear of failure
Engage your curiosity
Recognize and use your creative instincts
Give yourself the time, permission, and nourishment to do creative work
Develop a daily practice to accomplish these goals
Work collaboratively
Use your memories to engage the imagination

Order and kinds of exercises and instructors' talks may vary. Some exercises are done individually while others are collaborative.

Day 1:
Introduction to the hows and whys of the Creativity Workshop. Exercises in relaxation technique and guided visualization. Visualization: writing and drawing using the myth of the hero's journey as our framework. Automatic Drawing exercise: Finding our hidden imagery. Exercise in ‘show and tell' as a means of honing our natural storytelling styles and retrieving childhood memories to spark ideas. Instructor talks about famous writers, scientists, artists and their sources of inspiration, and how we can use some of those same sources.

Day 2:
Relaxation exercise followed by a visualization using map making. Map making as a way to find, chart, and tell fictional stories and true life experiences. Exercise in Automatic Writing. How automatic writing allows you to brainstorm and create in new and surprising ways. How we can use automatic writing to get over creative blocks and discover new ways of developing and editing work, while avoiding self-censorship. Why alternating between writing and drawing aids us in developing creative flexibility. The Interview: Listening and experiencing a life outside our own. How listening is as important as doing in creative work.

Day 3:
Today's visualization exercise uses letter writing as a way to explore voice in writing. Miniature Theatre: an exercise in storytelling with found
objects. Automatic Writing continues with Writing in Groups. How writing and/or drawing with others can stimulate our imaginations and expand our points of view. Topics of instructors' talks may include: the importance of play and the need to value the creative process over product. Enforced Cafe-Sitting: the art of relaxed observation. How to carve out time for creativity in a busy schedule. How to do on-going creative work in a short modules of time. How we can use luck and coincidence to jump start creative projects. Creative freedom requires discipline: Developing daily practice.

Day 4:
Today's visualization is The Myth of the Other: imagining ourselves living a parallel life. The lesson of the sand painting: How process can also be a product. Automatic drawing and writing exercises continue with a concentration on collaborative work. Instructor talk: Giving ourselves the time, permission, and nourishment to do creative work. How a team can recognize and use their creative instincts together. Life after Workshop: Ways to keep using these techniques to keep our imaginations alive and flourishing.

As a result, they will be able to exercise better business practices in order to minimize their risk of having to face any of these exposures, or the damage to reputation/business operations that could result.

ATTENTION IDC MEMBERS: If you return your renewal information by September 30, 2011, AND attend this webinar, you will receive a 5 per cent discount on your liability insurance policy (November 1, 2011 renewal or your new policy effective November 1, 2011). For further info about your insurance policy, please contact Mumby Insurance Brokers at 1.800.446.5745 or inquire@mumby.com. You must register for the seminar through IDC, see registration info below.

Designers can expect to gain an understanding of how insurance protection plays an essential role in the strength and vitality of their business. By knowing how and when your coverage reacts, lawsuits and the resulting financial devastation can be reduced or even prevented.

Attendees will gain awareness of the types of exposures they face as professionals. As a result, they will be able to exercise better business practices in order to minimize their risk of having to face any of these exposures, or the damage to reputation/business operations that could result.

ATTENTION IDC MEMBERS: If you attend this seminar and return your renewal information by October 1, you will receive a 5 per cent discount on your liability insurance policy (November 1, 2011 renewal or your new policy effective November 1, 2011). Those who are already insured in the program will be contacted by Mumby with renewal instructions in the first week of September.

Webinar: Effective Marketing Strategies for Interior Designers

Presented by: Sandra Bekhor, President of Bekhor Management, M.B.A., B.Sc. Architecture, B.Sc. Physiology

Why does marketing remain elusive to so many? Unless connected to goals and the real difference offered by a firm, marketing is simply a series of disjointed and often costly activities. A marketing strategy integrates the overall plan while also ensuring that each individual activity is selected for its ability to reach and deliver impact with the desired growth market. This two-part presentation will provide you with the tools to understand what's involved in developing and implementing a marketing plan, customized to meet your unique circumstances and goals:

Part 1 - The strategic marketing plan:

In the first hour of this webinar, we will explore how to develop a marketing plan (or modify an existing plan) that aligns with practice development goals, is measurable, stays within an appropriate budget, doesn't overextend resources and maximizes impact with the right audience.

Part 2 - Writing effective marketing copy:

In the second hour of this webinar, we will review the dos and don'ts of writing copy for various aspects of the marketing plan. This session will present participants with information, examples and strategies that demystify marketing and transform it into a measurable investment that delivers a predictable and ongoing return.

Sandra Bekhor
President of Bekhor Management, M.B.A., B.Sc. Architecture, B.Sc. Physiology
Sandra founded Bekhor Management to enable Canadian professionals to achieve their vision for their practices by leveraging their existing, authentic strengths. The Toronto-based firm offers marketing, branding and strategic planning services responsive to the business of professional practice. Sandra also speaks, teaches and writes for various professional associations and publications.
