2010 ARIDO Awards honour Ontario’s best interior designers

Published by Julia Salerno, October 06, 2010.

The Association of Registered Interior Designers of Ontario (ARIDO) announced the winners of its annual awards program during a gala dinner last night at the Liberty Grand in Toronto. This prestigious awards program honours innovation, creativity and professional achievement in the province's interior design industry. This year's judges awarded a Project of the Year, five Awards of Excellence, and 23 Awards of Merit, including three Awards of Merit: Sustainable Design. (See attached list.)

One Kids children's treatment centre in North Bay, Ontario, was named Project of the Year. Interior designer and ARIDO member, Anne Carlyle, of Carlyle Design Associates, created the beautiful and functional interior of this new, 41,000-sq.-ft. building that supports children with disabilities. The building, by Mitchell Architects, of North Bay, is designed on one level, maximizing safety and accessibility.

As in past years, this year's winning projects showcase a wide range of interior design talent, from retail to residential to corporate to health-care to major restoration projects. In addition to the children's treatment centre, the 2010 Awards of Excellence include a luxury retail store in Dublin, Ireland, a large retail shop in Toronto that showcases four major sports brands, an employee childcare centre in Calgary, a hotel and residences model suite in Ottawa, and a Toronto patisserie.

"We are very proud that our members are creating award-winning designs within Ontario's borders and beyond," says ARIDO's president, Theo West-Parks. "Our members work in all sectors and have an important influence on the spaces where the public live, work and play."

This year, for the first time, three projects received awards of merit for their eco-friendly designs. Leon's Furniture at the Roundhouse, Toronto, AIR MILES Reward Program Customer Care, and The Green Grind, a Toronto neighbourhood coffee shop, each won an Award of Merit and an Award of Merit: Sustainable Design. The latter recognizes projects that incorporate sustainable solutions with exceptional design. Other double winners this year were Anna Simone of Cecconi Simone Inc. who won an Award of Excellence for a condo model suite and an Award of Merit for a condo sales centre; Valerie Gow of Gow Hastings received two Awards of Merit for public and institutional spaces, as did Don Parker of Cannon Design in the categories of public and institutional spaces and recreational facilities.

"The Association takes great pride in the contribution its members make to public and private spaces," says West-Parks. "ARIDO's Awards Program builds public awareness of our professional capabilities and the important contribution interior designers make to the built environment."
