Leave it to the experts: 4 reasons why it’s important to hire an interior designer for your home

Published by Patrick Voisin, September 13, 2017.

1. Public protection: Professional interior designers go far beyond aesthetics and surface changes. They create interior environments that fulfill project goals, and protect the health, safety and welfare of the public. Interior designers are skilled professionals who combine creativity with extensive training to become qualified to design new spaces from the ground up as well as reinvent existing spaces.

2. Professional experience: Qualified professionals are trained to visualize the finished space as a whole, incorporating finishes, materials and products that create a cohesive interior. Professional interior designers have a knowledge base from years of experience and training. It’s not just about aesthetics or having an ‘eye’ for color. Without the expertise of a professional interior designer, home owners may select items that do not fit in terms of scale, harmony, colour and function. These can be costly mistakes for a homeowner.

3. Industry access: Interior Designers have knowledge and access to new and specialized products and finishes that may be available only to the trade. In conjunction with this, they are trained on the best applications for these products.

4. Continued training: Interior designers that have passed the NCIDQ exam (or those grandfathered when the NCIDQ was adopted) become professional members of their provincial association, IDC and NCIDQ. To retain their membership there are requirements for professional participation; continuing education; and liability, and errors and omissions insurance.
