IDC Takes Table Top Tradeshows Coast to Coast

Published by Julia Salerno, February 27, 2012.

Since the restructuring of Canadian interior design organizations in 2010, IDC has been entrusted with the mission of supporting professional development from coast to coast. Our presence has grown considerably over the past year, working hand-in-hand with provincial member-associations to organize a number of local events. Table top tradeshows – local tradeshows where suppliers and manufacturers display their latest products and services on table tops, rather than within booths – have proven to be a great way of bringing the local interior design community together.

IDC was greatly inspired by Alberta’s already successful Urban Encounters table top tradeshow series, hosted in both Edmonton and Calgary. Based on the Urban Encounters model, the Professional Interior Design Institute of Manitoba (PIDIM) launched the annual Manitoba Design Exchange Table Top Trade Show in 2010, and further expanded the event in 2011. Travelling further west, the Interior Design Institute of British Columbia’s (IDIBC) Vancouver Island Chapter will hold its second annual Design Exchange Event on March 23.

These annual events not only give local interior designers the chance to see, touch and sample the latest products and services available on the market, it has also provided a venue where the local design and supply communities can meet and network in an informal, social atmosphere to help in the establishment of a mutually beneficial client-vendor relationship and an opportunity for members to catch up on Continuing Education Credits, all in one location.

This year, IDC is broadening its efforts to bring events like these across the country. Table top tradeshows on the horizon include an upcoming event in Prince Edward Island, hosted by the Association of Registered Interior Designers of New Brunswick (ARIDNB) in May. This will be the first IDC tradeshow of its kind on the East coast. Then in September, the province of Saskatchewan will be the next province to benefit from a new table top tradeshow. Even more opportunities are planned for 2013 as IDC expands our efforts and fulfills its mission of growing the profession on a national level.

This article will appear in the March issue of Coverings Magazine – one of the many publications IDC regularly contributes to in an effort to promote the profession.
