Canadian government to reduce burdens on small businesses

Published by Julia Salerno, February 28, 2011.

The government of Canada is taking action to reduce the federal regulatory compliance burdens on small businesses in Canada through the creation of the Red Tape Reduction Commission. The term "red tape" is associated with the time and resources spent by businesses to demonstrate compliance with regulatory requirements. Reducing red tape helps businesses compete and creates jobs for Canadians.

The Commission is mandated to identify the annoyances to businesses that stem from federal regulatory requirements, with a focus on ones that have a clear detrimental effect on growth, competitiveness and innovation. In addition, the Commission will recommend options that address the annoyances and that will control and reduce the compliance burden on a long-term basis while ensuring that the environment and the health and safety of Canadians are not compromised.

The Commission will consult Canadian businesses and individuals through an online consultation process which will be open until the end of the month. Visit reduceredtape.gc.ca, to add your comments or for more information.
