IDC attends IDA Congress and IFI General Assembly in Taipei

Published by Julia Salerno, November 29, 2011.

From October 22 to 29, past-president David Hanson, IDC executive director, Susan Wiggins and director of business development, Jenn Taggart, along with APDIQ president, André LaPointe attended two international events in Taipei, Taiwan: The IDA (International Design Alliance) Congress and IFI (International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers) General Assembly.

Their attendance at the events were funded, in large part, by the City of Montreal and Mission Design who led a mission of three representatives from each of the graphic design, industrial design and interior design professions to present an opportunity to host a World Congress of Design in Montreal in 2017. IDC supports Mission Design's efforts to host this world class event and were pleased to be part of this initiative.

Mission Design is proposing that the World Summit + Congress of Architecture, Design and Planning to be held in Montréal in 2017. The events held in Taipei were an opportunity to present this unique event to the individuals who will decide if the bid is successful. The first event the delegation attended was the three day IDA Congress. The first of its kind, this congress was a joint event organized by the International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers (IFI), International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID) and The International Council of Graphic Design Associations (ICOGRATA) with the intent of creating a cross disciplinary conversation for the professions involved. Hosted by the Taiwanese Government, the congress was deemed a great success.

The keynote presentations, social events and design exhibitions that were held in the city around the congress created a unique opportunity for education, conversation, and provocative discussion. As part of the congress and design exhibition, Mission Design created a showcase exhibit which provided a snapshot of Canadian design talent. The exhibit, which was hosted by Jenn Taggart, was a huge draw at the show and received several media hits throughout the event. See photos here. The delegation spent a part of each day at the exhibit hosting various VIPs and local professionals with an interest in Canadian design.

The second event the delegation attended was the IFI General Assembly; a bi-annual event held over two days to elect a new board, bring members up-to-date on the organization's activities and hold workshops on interior design related topics. We are happy to report that at the General Assembly, David Hanson, IDC Past-President, was elected to the IFI Board. Read the news release, here.

Susan Wiggins and André LaPointe presented the 2017 congress and summit to the IFI membership on the second day of the assembly and it was met with a favourable response.

Other highlights of the week in Taipei include:

- The official acceptance of the IFI declaration by the Taiwanese Government
- Having Vice-Mayor of Montreal, Helene Fotopolous as part of the Mission Design delegation supporting the bid in numerous meetings with key officials

This mission was an excellent opportunity for IDC to spend time with colleagues from several countries, not only from the interiors profession, but also from the industrial and graphic design professions. It was a unique opportunity and we are grateful to the City of Montreal and Mission Design for their invitation to participate. We will continue to bring you news on both IFI and Mission Design's efforts in future issues of ID Connections.
