IDC Mission to UAE a great success

Published by Julia Salerno, May 25, 2011.

Eleven IDC members from across Canada spent a week in the UAE exploring business opportunities for their companies. Spending three days in Dubai and two days in Abu Dhabi, the itinerary included meetings with Government officials, industry members, the professional association, manufacturers and most importantly, potential clients.

Meetings were held with Aldar Hospitality, the Intercontinental Hotel Group, and Majid Al Futtaim, a large retail developer in the Middle East. Each meeting shed a little more light on working in the Middle East. The top two tips: face-to-face is key to developing a relationship (e-communications won't work) and secondly, a business partner is critical to doing business in the region.

In addition to the meetings, time was spent at the most significant architectural sites in the past year including a new mosque, the Burj Khalifa Tower and Saadiyat Island. The Island, located 500 metres off the coast of Abu Dhabi, is destined to be a world class leisure, residential, business and tourism hub designed to showcase Abu Dhabi to the world. Here is what some of the participants had to say about the mission:

It was great to see that part of the world and to learn how to do business there. By having the opportunity to also see some of the significant landmarks and sites gave me great insight to the expectations of that part of the world.

The trip exceeded my expectations I was not expecting such great contacts. The trip was well organized, very full and definitely worth
the time and cost.
The trip was exceptionally organized and informative. We got such a great overview of the culture, religion and work ethic there which seems to be all intertwined.

IDC thanks the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada for their support of this initiative through the Global Opportunities for Associations program. It is the Association's goal to continue this type of work for our membership to support those companies who are considering international expansion opportunities for their business. The next mission planned is to India in October, 2011. Watch ID Connections for further details or contact Susan Wiggins, Executive Director at swiggins@idcanada.org.
