The McGuinty government recently received the report of the Drummond Commission on the Reform of Ontario's Public Services, including infrastructure. The report states: “Built infrastructure depreciates over time, representing an inevitable but predictable draw on the government’s fiscal position, yet done properly, these assets improve the productivity of a jurisdiction and either create returns elsewhere (through greater tax revenue) or offset future opportunity costs (such as traffic congestion).” The recommendations put forth are in an effort to reduce Ontario's deficit, which is expected to hit $16 billion. The McGuinty government aims to eliminate the deficit by 2017/18.

Although we believe that this is a vital component for managing the province’s growth, ARIDO along with its colleagues from the Construction and Design Alliance of Ontario (CDAO), have composed a formal response to the report to ensure the province's debt burden does not interfere with long-term infrastructure plans and innovation. ARIDO and CDAO appreciate the fact that the Drummond report recognizes the importance of infrastructure investment and we will endeavour to work with all parties to ensure that priority is given to implementation of key recommendations.
