Appetite for Design | El Catrin

 El Catrin

El Catrin Location: 18 Tank House Lane, The Distillery District, Toronto Area: 8,000 sq. ft. Budget: $1.2 Million

Located in Toronto’s historic Distillery District, known for its restored Victorian-era buildings, artisan shops and galleries, El Catrin is a bold homage to Mexican cantinas and is appointed with vibrant details and playful furnishings. A visual mosaic of Mexican motifs, the interiors of El Catrin were inspired by the Mexican traditions of La Loteria Mexicana, Papel Picado paper art, and urban street art.

Munge Leung’s design of El Catrin features authentic Mexican tile floors, custom designed metal screens, laser-cut lampshades and metal screen details, two private dining rooms and an electrifying two-storey hand-painted bas-relief mural by artist Óscar Flores of Mexico City. El Catrin’s 5,000 square foot outdoor patio is layered with vibrant colors, and features a central open fire pit and full-service outdoor bar. Custom designed laser cut metal screens inspired by traditional Mexican paper art enclose the patio, and evocative, oversized lampshades hang over the dining banquettes, giving the patio and intimate and inviting atmosphere.

Munge Leung’s interior design drew inspiration from Mexico’s Día de Muertos and authentic Mexican cuisine. El Catrin offers a modern tapas-style menu crafted by Chef Olivier Le Calves (who hails from Mexico City), which offers southern Mexican dishes from Oaxaca and Yucatan that are ideal for sharing.
