IDNS makes great strides in amendment to Interior Designers Act

The Registered Interior Designers of Nova Scotia (IDNS) were granted a Practice Act in 2003, the only IDC provincial association with this legislation. Under the Interior Designers Act, the scope of practice of interior design included buildings under Part 9 of the National Building Code. Recent amendments to the Nova Scotia Architects Act removed the requirement to have a Registered Architect submit to the authority having jurisdiction for building permit application for these projects.
The Nova Scotia Building Advisory Committee requested that the Interior Designers of Nova Scotia seek an amendment to the Interior Designers Act to align the exemptions of the Interior Designers Act to the Architects Act.

The Governance and Regulatory Committee of IDNS in 2006 requested that this amendment be drafted by the Department of Justice. In October 2010, the committee approached the NDP Government and sought that this amendment be brought forward, as it was resting at the Department of Justice.
On April 28, 2011, the Bill to amend the Interior Designers Act was tabled. It moved swiftly through the Nova Scotia Legislature and received third reading and unanimous passage on May 10.

The amendment to the Interior Designers Act will pave the way for the addition of a ‘Letter of Undertaking' for interior design. These ‘Letters' are part of the Nova Scotia Building Code Regulations and are required on all projects filed for National Building Code Part 3 building permit approval.
The addition of a ‘Letter of Undertaking' for interior design will remove the final obstacle that often is presented when Registered interior designers make an application for a building permit for projects under their direct supervision.

The Association of Interior Designers of Nova Scotia looks forward to working with the Nova Scotia Building Advisory Committee to bring to completion this process and ensure that the undertaking of responsibility to inspect the project site during construction for conformance to the submitted interior design drawings and documents.
