BC design industry mourns the loss of Tom Park

Tom was born and raised in Prince George B.C.  He studied Interior Design at the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Architecture, receiving his bachelor’s degree in 1969.

From 1969 to 1975 , Tom obtained extensive experience in furniture design, office and commercial interior design, and in large scale building planning and coordination, where he worked with Pacific Office Equipment, Eaton Design Group, the University of Ottawa, and with MMP Vancouver (formerly Tanner/Kay Architects) of which he became an Associate.  In 1975 Tom formed Park Interior Consultants Ltd.  The firm was involved in a wide variety of interior design and planning projects, many of them highly specialized, ranging from corporate offices and government services to restaurants and museums.

Tom also contributed a large part of his time in many Design Community endeavors, including “Innovation 83”; The subject was “The Design of the Office of the Future”. He was also very involved in the Cartwright Street Gallery.  Tom had a great talent for engaging people in his endeavors and making every event fun.

In the early 1980’s IDIBC was not the organization from which one could obtain their RID. Tom was part of a team that was instrumental in establishing the first Canadian chapter of IBD [Interior Business Designers]. It is through their efforts that IDIBC members were able to write the NCIDQ in Vancouver and obtain RID status. More recently Tom volunteered his time on IDIBC's Policy & Procedures committee and was also the Industry Member Liaison.

Tom relocated to Toronto in the mid 80’s where he worked with Ove Design Interiors Inc. as managing director responsible for marketing, promotions, design and operations.  He also worked with Dunlop Farrow Inc. Architects, and Blackwood Miller Construction in the capacity of project management and marketing representative.

In the early 90’s Tom returned to Vancouver B.C. where he continued his project management and marketing career with Lawson Projects Ltd.  Tom’s diverse experience and talent then lead him to creating Park Resources where he established himself as a project coordinator for large scale installations and initiated the international sales and marketing plan for Arconas seating. The result created large contracts in airport seating for the Vancouver International Airport, JF Kennedy International Airport and Ferihegy Airport, Hungary. Also of note, he represented Blackstock Leathers and Prismatique Tables.

In 2007 Tom joined Omicron.  As a project manager he provided mentorship to the interior design team, marketing initiatives and large scale logistical coordination.  He was acknowledged for his leadership and exceptional people skills.

Tom was known for his infectious laugh,  unwavering optimism, a welcoming and gracious host, wonderful cook with a spontaneous willingness for adventure. His life was fully lived. We will remember him as a bright, cheerful presence and most of all good friend.

There will be a reception held in honor of Tom’s celebration of life at the Vancouver Arbutus Club on Friday August 10, 2012.  Exact details are still forth coming and will be posted on the Facebook site, Remembering Tom Park.
