On Wednesday, April 10, the Business Development Committee (BDC) hosted its first event of the year. Bowlerama 2013 was a resounding success by all measures; not only did the event help bring IDIBC and IDC members together for a wonderful evening, but it served as the launch for the new Tom Park Student Bursary which will be presented next month at the IDIBC Annual General Meeting . As a founding father of what is now IDIBC, a long-standing IDIBC volunteer, and former Industry member liaison to the BDC, Tom Park is remembered as a fun-loving, generous, hard-working man. Tom passed away suddenly in June of 2012. The  BDC is pleased to honour him and promote the values the community most admired in him. Tom's last employer, Omicron, kicked-off the bursary fund with a very generous pledge of $1,000.00, and a rowdy team of his former colleagues came out to bowl with Platinum Sponsor, Shaw Contract Group.

The small venue was packed to capacity with enthusiastic bowlers sporting glow-in-the-dark apparel as well as tables laden with prizes and an abundance of silent auction items donated from attendees and the industry at large.  Beatty Floor’s All Gutters No Glory showed their competitive spirit when they arrived at their lane in professional bowling shirts while carrying their own trophy.

Prizes included  Beatty Floor’s All Gutters No Glory for the highest score, BYU’s Strike a Posse for best individual score and Shaw’s team WTH for most honest scoring. There was no shortage of donations either as attendees were challenged to empty their pockets to contribute to the fundraising efforts. Along with a few Jamaican coins and a hairclip, the pocket-dumping effort raised a whopping $300!

The silent auction showcased 12 beautiful items that sold for a total of $1,700. A huge thank you to all donors and to the two ladies who so badly wanted the same chair! (You know who you are!)

The BDC has since been contacted by a member of the community who wishes to remain anonymous. With the help of one incredibly generous mystery donor, the Bowlerama event raised $3,500 for the Tom Park Student Bursary, helping to secure longevity for this award and ensuring Tom’s energy will be a part of the youth in the BC design community for years to come.

Thank you to all participants, sponsors and silent auction donors!
